My words may be largely-known and redundant, but from what I've seen (I work in industry), consultants in large companies (like the one I work in) are generally called in as the solution to "we'd love to carry out a thorough analysis of (___) but we just don't have the time/resources", not "we're not smart enough to unravel issues in our own industry so we need 3 oxford-educated posh kids who may know little or nothing about our company to show us the way".Blue-chip strategy consulting is (very) rarely strategy definition. My view is that if you really like intellectual, "blue-sky" strategic challenges, you're more likely to find it in a mid-market boutique firms that works with SMEs, founded by talented individuals with little business acumen, who genuinely feel they need some real strategic direction... am I wrong?
