I have recently found out about this firm. Recruiter claims they are better than MBB because of their specilisation. I have an offer from B, but am interested as my background is finance. Can anyone shed some usual light on work, culture, salary, reputation etc? Many thanks!

Who are they? Are they a PE house or a consultancy? If the latter, any of the Bs beats them hands down.

According to the Vault:AlixPartners is an international business advisory firm that has made its name and earned its reputation through its work in the corporate turnaround and restructuring industry. Although it can provide other services, the firm’s four main business functions are operational performance improvement, financial restructuring and bankruptcy reorganization, litigation consulting and financial advisory services. The firm is most known for its services aimed to reverse the fortunes of struggling companies, but it also offers nip-and-tuck services, such as performance improvement and strategic consulting services for companies that are not in financial straits but may still be looking to improve operations. Operating in the United States, Europe and Asia, AlixPartners has been retained by major companies including Cadbury Schweppes, GM, Kmart, Toys R Us and more. Best of all for its clients, AlixPartners works on a pay-for-performance system, aligning its compensation structure with its clients' success. What's in it for the recruiter to persuade you to take the Alix Partners job? Presumably they would get comission whereas they won't if you take your B offer.

They ARE a good firm but MBB are in a different league, particularly re CV cred. Also Alix seen as a bit left field rather than mainstream cons. Culture a bit odd: obsessive secrecy re bonuses for example (they won’t even give the merest hint what one might get during the i/v process but lowball on base anyway). It’s a no brainer.

Your face will fit there or it wont. If it does, you will do well if you are coming from Big 4, the natural stream into Alix and similar firms such as Alvarez. If it doesnt you will find yourself deeply unhappy. Troubled culture, diffilculties in gaining scale I hear, but quality work and a good reputation in what they do. Not MBB level, but then nothing else is really. Its a step up from Big 4, not a step down from MBB.

Very helpful. Not.The brands of Alix and A&M are rather well established among PE firms with portfolio companies needing rapid help.Very different environment to MBBB. Less strategising, more doing. Incidentally several people in A&M London are ex-McKinsey.

Kind of a silly response. The point of firms like A&M and Alix is that they're full of people who've been there and done it, and have credibility with clients because of their experience.Totally difference model to McKinsey, where consultants typically join with little prior experience.
