Hi guys. Please can you share tips for how to stay comfortable when working at a desk in an office for extended periods?Basically I find it almost impossible to stay sat in one place for too long at one time, let alone when you have a desk that faces the wall and you have to sit there in a suit and tie! It's so uncomfortable! The only rest I get is a 20 second walk to the toilets and maybe the odd 2 minute break at the watercooler. It's an open plan office so I can't even stand up and pace around as I make calls, nor can I really make personal calls on my mobile as a bit of a distraction. I am sure prisoners have more in the way of freedom than this.So basically I would appreciate any tips you guys may have for making life easier or more comfortable when serving 45 hours per week in the office.

take up smoking - you will then have an unalienable right to skive off outside for an hour a day getting your fixes

You don’t have to take up smoking for that. All that I do is trail along to the smoking area with a few of my smoker pals, and get my 1 hour/day of exercise daily.

I do the following:- lots of short tea breaks- book meeting rooms to make calls from where possible- never call people in the office, walk over to their desk (same can apply to e-mails where appropriate)- ensure your desk/chair is ergonomically adjusted to the most comfortable working condition

I once worked on a project that required me to leave home at 5 on a Monday morning to be at my desk at the client before 9am, and then do almost no work all day.I killed two birds with one stone by having a sleep in the never-used disabled toilets outside the clients boardroom. An hour was quite achievable.

consider investing in a tattoo of a pair of wide-awake eyes on the back of your eyelids; you will be able to doze your way through years of public sector consulting while remaining visibly wakeful and at least as productive as your client colleagues
