You're more or less assured of being able to pick your first assignment from a choice of four or five and if there is no project that suits both your geographic needs and your area of specialism, its quite normal for you to be transferred to your "target" country so that you can aclimatise until a suitable project emerges. The only pain is that during that period you may have to go into the foreign office for a few hours a day (despite there being no project work) just to get to know the rest of the consultants, but as this usually means a nice lunch and a few drinks, most people are happy to make the effort.

My experience suggests that you may well be lucky. There were always lots of options for people to go and spend their first 9 months or so in Halifax or Hull. It may be hard to understand the local dialects.

If you wanted a travel job, why not join Thomas Cook? Despite what they tell you at milkround interviews, large parts of your career will be based in Rugby or Slough.

Thanks, but I don't see where I stated - or even intimated - that I wanted a "travel job". I would like an assignment abroad with a view to a permanent move if I enjoy it. I am merely asking what the possibilities are of working abroad with Deloitte fairly soon after joining. I have a face to face interview with a Senior Manager next week and will sound him out, but in the meantime, I was asking for some input that may be useful (i.e. you can ignore if you have nothing useful to say). Hope that clears a few things up.

Yes, it's a dumb question

Sure, it can happen - you just have to be direct. Make it clear to the Senior Manager that you will only join the firm if you have a written commitment to overseas transfer within one month of joining. If s/he doesn't agree, ask to see a partner instead.Seriously though, if you aren't trolling and this is genuinely in your mind going into an interview, then I doubt you are in possession of enough "common sense" to hold down any paid employment. If your rationale for leaving the UK is that you can't acclimatise or make friends, how does that speak to your ability to get along with clients or adapt quickly to new projects?

A bit extreme that response..... I wouldn't say there is a correlation between a dislike of a particular country's weather and ability to adapt to new projects! If it isn't trolling, then I don't see an issue in raising in your F2F with the SM. I'm pretty sure you aren't going to give the reasons you gave here so feel free to broach the subject (IMO).

Rich,I have to disagree. It's such a ridiculous and ill informed request that it would damage anyone at interview stage. If the original poster had done any research or spoken informally to any consultant he would know that already. If the original poster is serious - then I suggest he or she look elsewhere if trying to leave the country. There's a 5% chance of being sent abroad as a new grad and then only for a few months. You'd be committing to London for at least 2 years before you could consider a transfer.

As far as I can see it's not a "...ridiculous and ill informed request...". The original poster is wanting to know what the chances are of taking on an assignment, fairly soon, abroad, after joining Deloitte. You have given your opinion in the second paragraph. That's what he/she wanted! Job done! You mentioned "....or spoken informally to any consultant he would know that already", maybe that's the reason this thread was born! Just playing Devil's A!Cheers,

I think you have to ask your self the following question: Do you want to work for Deloitte or are you looking for a job as an expat. If it is the latter, then there are other ways of finding a job abroad: do some reserach and find jobsites, headhunters, recruiters in your region of choice. This is how I found my current job abroad. It took me about 8 months from start research to a signed contract. If you really want to work for Deloitte I would definitely talk about your ambitions to work abroad, but don't expect a job abroad in the first assignment. Just remember: it is very expensive for a company to send an employee abroad. So what do they get back in return. Usually (this is my personal experience) a company send you abroad if they see you as a 'hipo' and use it as a management development roadmap, or if you have a skill that is required abroad. Just my thoughts, anyway good luck with your interview.J.

If you want to work abroad, then you should just apply directly to the Deloitte offices in these countries. As others have said, you are not going to get onto international projects especially while Singapore and the US have major offices and staff bases of their own.
