Would you recommend working in a major consultancy (e.g. ACN, Big4 etc) in their London offices, as a good career move for serious consultants with hard technical skills? I've heard it's mostly sales there while all "real" work is actually outsourced...

You've made such a sweeping, broad statement that it is impossible to answer your question I'm afraid.

London is one of those cities seemingly every single American student in Brussels manages to visit. On the Eurostar, it’s two hours away, and a real pleasant two hours at that.

I was staying out of this one as the original question is flawed. Hard tech skills = real work, as opposed only sales...?

The real question is if it is worth the commuting (tubes, yuck) and the house prices to be in London?I'm strongly considering moving out of London as it would be nice to buy a house that doesn't look like a shanty. But the worry is if you go regional you'll miss out of the "best" work... who knows?

I'm going to say that "it depends". Are you a university graduate, desperate to hit the bright lights of Clapham every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night? Are you early 30s and desperate to experience London life? Are you married, with a couple kids? As someone else rightly pointed out - the original poster like many on here did not give enough information to give a decent answer. This is all too common and has me worried about the calibre of people joining "top" consulting firms.

If you can get cheap housing (i.e. Housing Association or council property) then it's worthwhile working in London for a while or commuting from somewhere much cheaper to live, such as the adjoining areas of Essex of Herts.. Otherwise, no. It's too much hassle. You could keep an eye out for developments in technical expertise in other parts of the country. There are science and technology 'parks' springing up all over the UK at present, including BioCity in Nottingham and Edinburgh, and there's a lot of research going on in and around Cambridge. Anywhere with a major academic research institution will be a focus for companies working in this field, including Manchester and Glasgow (which is, of course, the cultural centre of the Universe).
