If you can get cheap housing (i.e. Housing Association or council property) then it's worthwhile working in London for a while or commuting from somewhere much cheaper to live, such as the adjoining areas of Essex of Herts.. Otherwise, no. It's too much hassle. You could keep an eye out for developments in technical expertise in other parts of the country. There are science and technology 'parks' springing up all over the UK at present, including BioCity in Nottingham and Edinburgh, and there's a lot of research going on in and around Cambridge. Anywhere with a major academic research institution will be a focus for companies working in this field, including Manchester and Glasgow (which is, of course, the cultural centre of the Universe).
