I’ve recently made the move into a newly established team at a large Automotive OEM based in the UK and am eyeing up consultancy as my next move. While I realise that this may be seen as premature, (The department is new, the work is exciting at present and the remuneration is significantly better) I’m keen on focussing on projects that will give me the skills I need externally as a consultant. What I’m looking for here is some advice on key aspects I need to develop to be seen as “credible” as an experienced hire and firms that are likely to work with technology. I’ve got a real opportunity to do this as we’re still establishing the department and defining the scope of our projects. We’re a “Business Improvement” team at our core and the projects we manage essentially comprise work with Product Development from Director (selling our projects on a strategic/tactical level to put cost into a programme) to engineer level (Implementation and control planning).I’m confident enough that I’ve got a solid enough CV of a technical standpoint and have some good planning projects under my belt that touch on the programme management and commercial sides of the business. I’m very interested however in working in and developing more skills in the strategy segment of business improvement preferably for technology based industries. In summary:- What do I need to focus on to appear credible as a consultant in the strategy (preference) or “tactical projects” environment for technology firms?- What firms operate in these areas that are seen from within the consulting industry as prestigious?
