Hi all,I came across this wonderful site as I tried googling forums/websites that provide advice or share their thoughts about the broader life in consulting. I am working for a big 4 in one of the less big cities in the land down under. I have over 10 years of experience in the field of risk management and internal audit. I am currently a manager working on multiple projects and managing staff. In the past couple of years, I have been trying my luck to cross over into an in-house role. In the past 15 months, I've had couple of interviews, but never offered a role. Debrief from the job agency/prospective employer had indicated that there were more experienced candidates to whom the positions were offered. From where I am based at the moment, job opportunities in my field and at the level I want to get in are not very frequent. The key reason why I want to move out from big 4 is I have no interest in business development. I am more the operational type who just like to get things done and provide the value I can give to my clients. As you may be aware, there is an expectation to generate revenue (i.e. new sales/revenues) the more senior you become in big 4. I am also keen on focusing work just for one organisation, as this will allow me to become a family man when I am at home. (I do have a 2 year old daughter.) It's not uncommon for me to work at nights and even during weekends. I have thought of moving in another state, where it appears that there are more job opportunities (albeit a number of retrenchments announced in the professional service sector recently). The challenge is, we have our life all settled in where we are (i.e. house, friends etc.), and moving in another state almost means starting from scratch (which possibly means selling the house). (Not to mention that we have lived previously overseas as well, so moving and starting again would be a pain.)If I summarise what I can do at this stage:- find a job interstate and take it from there; - wait until an opportunity comes - however, not sure how long this will take and not to mention the competition in the job market;- just stay with my current job and change my perception about business development (however, as I mentioned, business development is not something I enjoy.)Has anybody been in a similar scenario? How did you go about your decision-making process and what considerations did you make? I would value your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Would be worth discussing confidentially with past/current clients. After all they have been happily paying your day rates. Also if you think it is hard to move now then it will be almost impossible when the kids are in school.

Thanks for your response. Might adapt a strategy to do that. It's worth noting your comment when the kids are already in school - very valid. Cheers.
