I'm curious as to my options following graduation from a Russell Group university with a decent 2.1 in Business and Financial Economics BSc, with first class grades in what I'd consider to be relevant modules such as labour economics, and corporate strategy. I was also awarded the Dean's Prize for achieving 95% in a statistics exam. From what I've seen on this forum, it seems like I'd be completely wasting my time applying to MBBB as a graduate, due to their stringent application criteria. I was thinking that I could perhaps start at a smaller shop and move across upon being successful, but is it even plausible to end up at one of the 'Big 4' having worked at a lower tier consultancy firm previously? I am just slightly paranoid about even applying to MBBB because I've read that you burn your bridges with them once you've been rejected once. What firms will realistically be interested? I should also note that my A-levels were ABB (Economics, Maths, English Lit, respectively).

Hi Petey,Is your motto "Nothing ventured, never disappointed"?Does your lack of backbone make it hard to stand up?Does you low self esteem help when limbo dancing?Jeez - Give me a cocky git that can be knocked into shape any day.The only reason you're likely to be wasting your time applying to an MBBB is that the other applicants will be super-confident self-believers. They will smell your fear and eat you as a snack between case studies.Grow some and apply...Or perhaps you'd rather not apply and then be able to continue to say "I would have been MBBB, but chose not to apply....?"Then you go to question if you're even good enough for the BIg4!! Have you met many BIG4 consultants? "slightly paranoid"????!!!!!!!!!!

Actually I'm not even sure you are really doubt yourself as much as you want to convey Petey.. note the references to 'relevant modules', 'Russell Group university with a decent 2.1' and 'Dean's Prize'. I suspect you already know you will apply, so maybe you just want some soothing ego stroking? You won't burn your bridges with MBB by being rejected... they will simply ask you to wait a year and get more experience before applying again. That is if you have any energy left after tossing off (mentally) on whatever collection of diplomas you amass after graduation to try and delay tell day when you find out if you are going to make it. But so you don't blow your chances by getting distracted, we will all compile a list of MC firms whio will realistically be interested in hiring you. After all, growing a pair will take time and we cant have you wasting any doing, oh I dont know, applications! You are either smug, a coward or lazy, and they are all equally damning Petey.

Why are you all being so harsh to this guy? Dear God! Lighten up, people. And so what if needs some reassurance before he does what he knew he would always do - apply to MBB that is. We all sometimes need support in whatever form. Just go for it, Petey. You have a good degree, but do you mind telling us where from? Russel Group is a long list of places and only few are targeted by MBB. Just a quick note. Why is everyone talking about MBB, or MCs in general, and Big 4 in the same context? They are world apart.

@ Patricia - you say.."Just a quick note. Why is everyone talking about MBB, or MCs in general, and Big 4 in the same context? They are world apart."Where are people doing this? Don't all the posts above show that the posters know this?

That is not 'people' that is one person - a raw grad nonetheless, who we wouldnt expect to delinteate these firms too closely.

Go for it, you have nothing to lose.If you apply, the worst that will happen is that you have a rejection, but have racked up some interview experience. The best that will happen is that you get the job.If you don't apply, you won't get the job. My personal experience is that once you've started working, it's easier to 'trade across / down' from your employer to one in the same league / league below, than it is to 'trade up' to an employer in the league above yours. (e.g. McK -> ACN - easy. ACN -> McK - harder). So you're better off starting your career as high up the food chain as possible, rather than throwing a low-ball just because you want to play safe.

Patricia, clearly you can read, but I fear you would fail in the old-fashioned skill of Comprehension tests, which require you to read a passage and draw fair inferences. Read the passage again and you might see that the OP starts by setting out his desire to join an MBBB firm, BUT recognising the stringent entry criteria, fears that he may have to settle for a “smaller shop”. This is a clear recognition on his part that they are not the same thing. He then goes on to immediately question this strategy by questioning whether it is feasible to start in a small shop and then progress to “EVEN” a big4 firm (my capitalisation for emphasis). The use of the word even is another clear indication that the OP recognises that big4 are not the same as MBBB, but would be a progression from a “small shop”e.g. I would love to play for Chelsea but suspect I would not EVEN get a trial for Scunthorpe – clear indication to even those not familiar with football that Scunthorpe are generally lower valued than Liverpool. The inference across the piece is clear to anyone who does more than read just the words in their literal fashion.1. The OP believes that MBBB firms have the most stringent application criteria, followed by big4, followed by “smaller shops”.2. The OP questions his own hypothesis that one might gain entry to a lower level of this hierarchy and then progress on the basis of experience earned when direct entry would have been impossible.Perhaps the lack of information that you managed to derive from the passage explains your lack of appreciation of literature, expressed elsewhere.

@AnonYou have too much time on your hands, really. I have no intention in pursuing this "argument" any further, although I could. With all this talk about really comprehending what the original poster was saying (are you a GMAT instructor or something?!?!), you missed out on an important moment in all this. Never mind what it is. Kiss

Somebody asks a fairly intelligent question and all that people want to do is talk rubbish - please stop wasting peoples time it completely defeats the point of a forum. In real response. If as you say you want MBBB give it a try they can only say no, or try again in the future. Also try the 'Big 4' and smaller players. Stagger your applications and keep trying. As a grad is all about focus on the area you are interested in and perseverance. Is it harder to go from smaller players up the chain, or even from 'Big 4' to MBBB yes. Though it has definitely been done.

... although I can't help noting that 'too underqualified' implies the existence of a perfect level of underqualification for the job, which is a pleasant thought...
