Have you ever been at a firm that was acquired by another? Did you stay? What was the experience like?

Use it to your advantageI've been in firms that have done the acquiring and my observation is that the acquired staff typically get regraded at a higher level. I met some folk who ended up as partners in a top strategy firm just because they were partners in the tiny little acquired firm. I for one could tell which partners were the "real" ones and which were the "acquired" ones just by looking at them. So, use it to your advantage. Now is the time to jostle for position...

It depends on the situation. Distressed acquisition? This can be a tough road for both firms. I've seen some pretty rough integrations. You really have to determine cultural fit. Do they have the same values, work ethic, etc. Generally if the acquisition proceeds, the commercials are adequate, so it's really about the work culture and people.Happy acquisition? This can be a great experience. The buying firm will generally see the acquired firm in a good light, can add value and has something that others can learn from. I've experienced and seen both. What is your situation?

It's a happy one - good commercial and strategic fit. On paper all of the rest looks good as well.I guess I am curious on how well they have worked in the past. I am sure most happy acquisitions have all of the partners drinking the Kool-Aid and that filters down. Does that transition into reality?

If it's a happy one, then the transition stage is really about you learning the new environment, the direction and pace of desired growth of the firm/practice, any new performance management or progression structures in place, the capability of your new peers, etc. Ask yourself if this acquisition will open up new opportunities for you or confine you? Most likely your Partners saw it as a great opportunity to expand. If the new environment fits your ambitions. Then start building relationships, understand how to navigate the progression structures and as BEP said, jostle for position and build that profile. You're the new kid to the block, but with a fancy new toy that everyone wants to see. Use it to your advantage.
