What is the appropriate level in a Fortune-100 company for an experienced engagement manager to leave at? I have an offer as a Sr. Manager at a great company, and I'm wondering if I'd be crazy to take it. Should I pass and hold out for an Associate Director or Director-level position? On the other hand, I'm eager to leave MBBB to take a job with more normal work-life balance.Cheers,Ad

EM - SM sounds about right. I wouldn't see an EM (even an experienced one) as being ready for a Director role in a FTSE100 yet.

Unless there is worldwide consistency (which there is not) in the hierarchy of titles across big companies and even geographically within individual companies, then surely the title does not matter so much as the job description. For example, how does a Brand/Strategy Director title in the US or German affiliate of a multinational compare with a Brand/Strategy Associate Director title in HQ with WW responsibility?"Who knows" is the answer to that, it depends on the company, the job description and the options going forward.Seems to me like you need to talk with HR and your interviewers at your prospective new company. Or provide more detail here...One other thing to consider - depending on the situation, there may be something to be said for coming in fractionally lower, putting in a stellar year and obtaining rapid promotion to provide some impetus, as well as picking up valuable experience that you may miss out on at a higher level.

oh no, always go in at the highest level possible! that way your next promotion has already been dealt with up front.
oh no, always go in at the highest level possible! that way your next promotion has already been dealt with up front.
Well of course, that's obvious, but I am not aware of many companies that offer an applicant a choice of entry-levels...Perhaps I wasn't clear. In the absence of multiple offers and when you are considering one company, as seems to be the case here, and the cloud is that you think the level is a bit low, the silver lining is that you have an opportunity to far more easily exceed expectations from day 1 and set yourself up with a very favourable trajectory.
