Hi,I have 12 years consulting experience having spent 4 years with a niche boutique firm joining as a graduate, 4 years with mid-tier firm, 2.5 years with Big 4 ‘firm 1’ as Manager & currently with Big 4 ‘firm 2’ for 1.5 yrs as SM.Focus on IT/information security, technology risk, compliance, risk management, assurance, information governance, data privacy and continuity services across varied industry sectors.I have had some great project experiences and good client exposure throughout my consulting career to date, however I am lacking desire, hunger and drive and generally ‘fed up’ with the consultancy slog and constant sales/promotional campaign/trumpet blowing.I am really looking to move into a senior industry role and keen to get anyone’s advice on transition to an industry role, best approaches for securing that dream role and if anyone can share tips or similar previous experiences?I want more control over my work, I want to ‘bed-into’ an organisation and want a stable base. I genuinely don’t have the passion for consulting anymore and want a role change to spark that passion and commitment back in me!I like the idea of a senior role within a medium sized company with growth ambitions. Does anyone have any thoughts on industry sectors worth pursuing or growth sectors? Thanks

"I am lacking desire, hunger and drive and generally ‘fed up’ with the consultancy slog and constant sales/promotional campaign/trumpet blowing""I genuinely don’t have the passion for consulting anymore""I want more control over my work, I want to ‘bed-into’ an organisation and want a stable base."This is the problem with consultancy. Back in the day, people would accept these issues because the pay was good. But now, just look at it. Day rates driven through the floor, staff other than the company owners paid more or less the same as they could get in industry - and for what? Job insecurity, brutal and continuous "feedback", up and out, relentless deadlines, clients who expect more than is realistic, under-sold projects, a transient peer group, travel, and basically having to work 4 or 5 jobs at once (multiple projects plus the internal stuff). Is it any wonder people are leaving?Guys - thoughts/suggestions? What can consultancy firms do to retain people? Bearing in mind client demands and the obvious economic constraints and so on.

I am also considering the same move myself. I feel like consulting is a bit of a dead end career for me personally. I actually enjoy the role I am in at the moment, but feel like I would learn and earn the same client side, with a better W/L balance. The things that I find most irritating is the willingness to 'low-ball' new hires, and the accepted practice of brown nosing for promotions. What's that about anyways?Perhaps its just where I've worked - but it's certainly not how I would choose to manage or lead any company.

I feel like consulting is a bit of a dead end career for me personallyI can entirely empathise with that comment, I really do know just what you mean. It's like being on a fast treadmill sometimes, don't you think?

Your best bet - start applying for relevant jobs (Head of Risk or whatever it is you focus on) and talk to some recruiters. Go to some interviews. That will give you a feel. You must have some clue about sector ... some you can rule out ... some aren't based in London or wherever (Pharma for example), some are declining others growing ... Get your CV together and start the process!

Do it. You don't know until you try. It is a common route out of consulting. It sounds like you are struggling to identify the role however - do you have an industry focus? That would help with the transition.Mid-size organisations are harder to identify so looks like using the network would help. Hell - even your current consulting employer may be willing to help place you into an up and coming firm. Good for the firm in the long term.
