Put yourself in the shoes of the person who has offered you the role. You would want to know if you were them and want to know why.If you went through an agent make sure they are passing on message in the way in which you would want and if possible try and talk to the person you are letting down. It's imperative that you try not to ruin the relationship as you may well cross paths in the future. It also depends why you've changed your mind but they may be able to fix this problem by offering you more money, more flexible working, more autonomy, more focus, more support etc...If they react badly then they probably weren't the right person to work for anyway. In my experience go with your gut. It's a brave thing to do to change your mind as long as you've done it for the right reasons and treat everyone professionally.Hope this helps.James

Always a tricky one....I'd make sure you have your reasons clearly outlined for when you call them so you can give them sound concerns and objections as to why you've changed your mind. If it's a counter offer, you need to be prepared for their response (either "give us a couple of days to see if we can counter again", or "OK thanks and good luck for the future").There's a good chance they'll want to arrange a coffee with you and a senior manager or partner to answer your objections so if you're dead set against joining them then you need to know how you'd answer that. If you've signed and sent it back and you don't join they are going to be cross there is no getting away from it. They'll have planned and allocated you as a resource so it'll have consequences their end and depending how you handle it you could burn bridges for the future. Remember management consulting is a very incestuous industry so be careful how you phrase things!Hope that helps a bit and good luckSarah
