superfluous

Hi all - have just been promoted from Senior Consultant to Managing Consultant at a Big Blue consultancy. By all measured and measurable accounts (top performance assessment, very good revenue generation, high utilisation, etc), I had a very good year. However, the pay rise that goes with the promotion seems low -to around £60k base. Initial attempts at negotiation have been rebuffed, so I've started to test the waters in the market and initial responses are *very* promising. I'd definitely appreciate any advice - am I right to think this offer is low?

Well, is this definitely the equivalent of Manager elsewhere e.g. Deloitte, Accenture etc? If so, I would say 60 is definitely low and you could get higher externally

Yes, its the equivalent of manager at Deloitte, Accenture, etc. I know that IBM does pay more for new hires and for new promotees at this grade (especially for those who've had a year like I've had), so do think it's likely time to have a good look round!

I would agree - I would say a base of £65k minimum is achievable elsewhere so do look around.

Being underpaid is one thing, but being undervalued is far more serious. High performing junior managers are the future of all firms. If they're not willing to massage you a little at this stage you should be focussing on exit options.

Given high performing junior managers are the future for a consulting firm - I agree that internal promotion pay should be at par to market rates or new hires. Indeed for similar role at Deloitte or Accenture you will get between 65-70k.
