I am part of a strategy group (business unit level) of a German Dax30 group. My main tasks are strategy development and implementation, strategic projects and competitive intelligence. Before that I used to work in turnaround/restructuring at one of the Big4 for more than five years focusing on strategic analysis, strategy assessment and top line assessment. In a nutshell: I am not really happy on the corporate side and would like to go back to consulting and preferably to top tier strategy consulting. How are my chances to do this? Any comments? Thanks a lot

sounds like you are already operating in the hinterland anyway - your career is fairly central to what most strategy consultants want to do after their stint in a consulting firm. To move into a strat house would I suspect look (and feel) retrograde and you'll be as discontented there too.Try some of the restructuring focused firms like Alvarez, Alix, Zolfo, Roland Berger (admit they are a strat house but perhaps better known for their restructuring work) etc. Just my guess but I think you'll find yourself more content there.

Marsday, thanks for the quick reply! Unfortunately the hinterland does not feel very good in this case. Not sure about getting back to restructuring as I wanted to do more pure strategy work. Even if does not seem to be a good solution - how do you rate my chances to enter the likes of MBBB? Any other opinions on the topic?

I'm typically more positive about strategy than my peers (at our firm and beyond). That's why they get me to do recruitment in my spare time...I think you would have a good chance. (Rhetorical) questions:- Have you come across MBBB at the Dax30? What about your former Big 4 peers? Could you network your way in? It seems a little surprising this wasn't a port of call with your CV...- The information you present is a great fit - how is the rest (e.g. academic)? You have presumably thought of strengthening it with an MBA if this isn't the case...- Is it worth considering applying in Germany where the Dax30 brand might be considered stronger? Or for Roland Berger and others who are strong in Germany?

Thanks Anon66 for commenting. Most of my Big 4 peers ended up in controlling, some in distressed investing, other turnaround practices or interim management, almost nobody went on to MBBBMy academics are pretty good but not excellent; I hold a German engineering degree from one the leading engineering universities. Thought a lot about getting an MBA – still not sure
