currently working at a very large company....think thomas edison.EY just came along about 2 weeks ago and asked if i would be interested in talking to them in regards to a Performance Improvement Senior position. I said sure and we started talking. Long story short, the position is in the advisory section of EY. It is a Performance Improvement Senior for finance. Looking at a big pay bump, but having to travel 80% of the time. the standard Mon-thur travel schedule, friday home office. I know people complain about the travel, but im hoping to find out more about what comes next, IE manager, senior manager etc. If the managers arent traveling 80%, then i can easily grin and bear the travel for 3-4 years. However, if managers are traveling non-stop, then this isnt something i would take. Just really lost because so many people complain about travel and hours, but you rarely hear the good things.....

Travel is part and parcel of consultancy, although it is not a constant. Some folks get really lucky and spend all their career pretty close to where they live. This is only likely if they live in or around a city like London and work in FS. Others spend their entire career away from home, although to be fair, some people play on this and choose to live in Cornwall or the Lake District, knowing its a great place for their family and they're going to be away from hom mid-week anayway.Sadly travel does not stop at a particular grade level, although you can manage it a little (very) when you get to SM or perhaps Director. Partners travel just as much but it tends ot be her there and everywhere rather than a four day commute. In short, getting your head down for 3-4 years is very unlikely to get you to a place where you can be an MC but not travel.HOWEVER - it might get you enough experience to get an offer from a different MC firm that has a no travel policy? these are niche firms that do quite well in attracting experienced consultanst who want to do local work.

Hi Benjie,Within EY there are two answers to your question, depending on which part of the firm you are joining. At a very high level, EY within the UK is split into two wholly seperate practices (different pay, leadership, bonus schemes, back office support) EY UK and Ireland (UKI) and EY Financial Services (FS).Both UKI and FS have Performance Improvement (PI).UKI PI is split into different depts... Supply Chain, IT Advisory etc, of which Finance is one.FS has PI split out into simliar depts, but all focused within financial services. If you are joining PI Finance within UKI the likelihood is you will be travelling/working away from home Mon-Thurs (and potentially friday) for the majority of your time at EY, including at manager level and above... Barring of course a London project (assuming that is where you will be based) as Mr Cool mentioned. Now if you work in the FS side, the probability of you travelling outside of London, AT ALL, for client work is around 10-20%. The majority of FS projects are London based, barring a few that are not, (generally the opposite of UK&I work). So if you can clarify which side of the business you are joining you will be able to have a better idea of the likelihood of travel, from your description as PI for finance I'm assuming it's the UKI side.Happy to elaborate if you need :)
